THE READING ROOM

Format TXT chapters for a working EPUB contents page.

Written by EpuBloom

The table of contents is built from headings in your TXT, not from page numbers. Put each chapter heading on a separate line.

Plain text has no built-in chapter structure. EpuBloom checks each trimmed line for supported heading patterns, splits the book into chapters, and uses those headings in the EPUB navigation.

1. A quiet morningNoA numbered paragraph alone is not a chapter marker.

Chinese markers can use Arabic digits or supported Chinese numerals, followed by 章、节、部、卷、篇 or 集. Ordinary prose beginning with these patterns can also be mistaken for a heading. The tool detects patterns; it does not understand the meaning of the sentence.

A small example you can copy

Title: River Notes
Author: EpuBloom

Chapter 1 — A quiet morning
The notebook was still empty.

Chapter 2 — Along the river
We stopped beside the bridge.

# Afterword
There was more to write tomorrow.

Download this chapter-formatting sample, select it in the converter, and set the book language to en. Check the detected title and author before exporting.

Why is a chapter missing from the contents?

Check the exact heading prefix, capitalization, and spaces. A heading placed at the end of a body paragraph is not a separate line. Use a supported prefix rather than expecting a bare number, a decorative separator, or a bold-looking Unicode font to create a chapter.

A book with no recognized headings uses a default chapter. English books use “Chapter 1”; books with a language code beginning with zh use “第1章.” Changing the website language does not translate your headings.

Why is there an unexpected first chapter?

Text before the first recognized heading may become an opening chapter. Title and author lines can remain in the body even after they have filled Book details. Review the first pages and remove an unwanted duplicate title block from a copy of the source, while keeping the desired metadata in the form.

Check the EPUB in a reader

  1. Open the downloaded book in your intended reader.
  2. Open its table of contents and check chapter titles and order.
  3. Follow several links and confirm each lands at the correct heading.
  4. Check the beginning, middle, and end of the body against the TXT.

For image and text styling on the first page, use the cover layout guide. If chapter names themselves are garbled, fix the text encoding first. The TXT to EPUB guide covers the complete conversion.
